Centres for pain management help patients find the right combination of therapies to manage chronic pain. If you have arthritis, fibromyalgia, back pain, migraine headaches, sciatica, or another condition that causes chronic pain, ask your doctor to refer you to one of Ontario’s excellent pain care clinics.

Doctors at these centres often recommend different combinations of medications in order to treat pain more effectively and to reduce side effects. They may also work with you to develop a treatment plan that includes healing therapies such as platelet-rich plasma injections or procedures to reduce pain such as nerve blocks or Botox® treatments.

If you’re referred by an Ontario doctor, most pain care clinics are covered by OHIP. Ask your doctor about centres for pain management in your area and improve your quality of life today!

Centres for Pain Management

There are many factors to consider when you are dealing with a condition that causes chronic pain. Most patients are prescribed pain medication, but even when it’s effective, medication can have unwanted side effects. Sometimes patients develop a high tolerance to strong pain medication, which can be detrimental.

Mental state also plays a large part in how we experience pain, so anti-depressants may also become part of the medication mix. However, it can be difficult to get the right dosage and the right balance of drugs to ensure that the patient will get the maximum benefit.

Simple Strategies

Many patients find that relaxation techniques also help them to deal with chronic pain, and yoga and meditation are often recommended as possible options. Even a hot bath can help relax the muscles and mind. Simple pain relief treatments, such as icing inflamed areas or using topical creams may also provide a small measure of relief.

Pain often keeps people from exercising, but a bit of gentle exercise (such as walking) can help to preserve overall health and the body’s range of motion. Also, obesity can exacerbate painful conditions, so losing weight when recommended can help to alleviate pain.

Consulting the Experts

However, many times patients can only manage pain effectively after consulting with specialists in pain management. These doctors are extremely knowledgeable about pain medication and about medical techniques that can provide relief.
